Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein, a Jew by birth and one of the fathers of the atomic age, was
born in 1879 in Ulm,Germany. After public school in Munich and Aarau,
Switzerland, Einstein studied mathematics and physics at Swiss Polytechnic
Institute in Zurich. In 1914 he assumed a professorship of physics in the
University of Berlin.
While he was visiting the United States in 1933, the Nazi government of
Germany took his property, and divested him of his German citizenship. At
this time he accepted the responsibility of directing the school of mathematics
in the institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey.
In challenging an axiom of long standing, and in analyzing his assumption,
Einstein was led to the invention of the theory of relativity. It is this theory of
for which Einstein is universally known. His original manuscript on relativity
sold for $6,000,000.00 in 1944 and is now in the library of Congress.Said
Albert Einstein, “If my theory of relativity is proven successful, Germany
will claim me as a German, and France will declare that I am a citizen of the
world.Should my theory prove untrue, France will say I am a German, and
Germany will declare that I am a Jew.”
When coaxed to tell what led him to what led him to his gravitational field
theory, Einstein stated that he asked a workman who had fallen off a building
(landing unhurt on a pile straw) whether he noticed the tug of the “force” of
gravity on the way down. This story is reminiscent of Newton’s falling apple
story. Both stories are highly suspect.Einstein’s famous formula, E=mc2
(relating to mass and energy), was used to work out some of the basic
problems of atomic energy.
After 1919, Einstein became internationally renowed. He accrued honors
and awards, including the Nobel Prize in physics in 1921, from various
world scientific societies. His visit to any part of the world became a
national event; photographers and reporters followed him everywhere.
While regretting his loss of privacy, Einstein capitalized on his fame to
further his own political and social views.
This famous man, who lived quite a personal life, was fond of classical
music, played the violin; died in 1955 while still residing in Princeton.
